Dental implants play a very important role in modern dentistry. As the former restorative director of the largest study club in Atlanta, Dr. Harden regularly discussed the benefits of dental implants. For over 20 years, he’s used them in his practice to replace missing teeth for his patients. Dental implants are the only prosthetic option that looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are biocompatible, titanium anchors surgically positioned below the gum line. The anchors support artificial crowns that fill the gap left by missing teeth. With implants, Dr. Harden can also secure a lower denture, which improves comfort and will enhance your ability to taste food. Over time, the bone tissue fuses to the titanium, creating a stable foundation that will allow you to chew your food with ease. Approved for use by the American Dental Association, dental implants have provided hundreds of thousands of patients with a long-term solution to missing teeth.
How do dental implants work?
Through the phenomenon known as “osseointegration” the bone tissue actually attaches to the titanium implant. This reduces long-term bone resorption (deterioration), because the implants stimulate the bone similarly to natural tooth roots. Dental implants also withstand chewing forces much more effectively than other tooth-replacement options, because the design closely mimics that of natural teeth.
Who needs dental implants?
Most people who are missing teeth and would benefit from improved chewing, speech, and esthetics are candidates for dental implants. They can also provide a solution for patients who have difficulty wearing removable dentures. Ideal implant candidates will have adequate jawbone density and have relatively good systemic health. Smokers and patients with disease or conditions that interfere with proper healing (i.e. uncontrolled diabetes or radiation or chemotherapy for treating cancer) may not be eligible to receive dental implants.
How do I get dental implants?
First, Dr. Harden will examine your oral health and medical history. He may take X-rays to determine bone density and/or create study models to determine your candidacy. If you’re eligible for implants, he will discuss all aspects of your case with you and coordinate treatment with an implant surgeon.
What should I expect?
The severity of your case will dictate the amount of preliminary appointments. Some people only need two appointments prior to implant placement, while others require several. After the surgeon places the implants into your jawbone, you will need to allow time for the bone to fuse to the implants. This can take four weeks to six months. Typically, a temporary crown is placed on top of the implant post during this process. After the implant site heals, Dr. Harden will secure your permanent restoration.
