Amalgam (Silver)
“Silver fillings,” technically called amalgams, have been used in dentistry for over 100 years and have filled the needs (pardon the pun) of millions of people. The success of metal fillings can be attributed to their strength and resistance to decay. However, because of their mercury content, amalgam has stirred a lot of controversy in recent years. More and more dentists use mercury-free, composite as an alternative. At Fountain View Dentistry, we see hundreds of patients who still have amalgam fillings. Scientific evidence supports the theory that as amalgam “break down” they release toxic mercury into the body. For this reason, we recommend replacing amalgams with white fillings when they begin to deteriorate. Silver and Amalgam Fillings

Composite fillings, also called mercury-free, tooth-colored, or white fillings, are the treatment of choice in modern dentistry. Unlike amalgam fillings, composite fillings are bonded to the tooth and create a stronger, more esthetically pleasing restoration. Composites can be shaded to match your natural tooth color, and they’re durable enough for use on back teeth. The composite material can also be placed on front teeth (composite veneers) to repair chips and breaks or close gaps. Dr. Harden and our patients benefit from the versatility and artistic freedom that composite affords.
