Porcelain Crowns, otherwise known as “caps,” fit over teeth and provide protection against the tremendous biting forces that teeth experience daily. Commonly used to repair broken, fractured, or decayed teeth, crowns can also improve the esthetics of a smile. Dr. Harden offers several types of crowns depending on your unique needs.
Gold/Metal Crowns – In the past, metal crowns were used exclusively to restore back teeth. While this still offers a good solution, most patients nowadays prefer a more natural-looking solution.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns – Ideal for back teeth, PFM crowns consist of a metal framework and a porcelain casing. These crowns combine strength and esthetics for stunning smile makeovers.
All-Porcelain Crowns – Revolutionary techniques and materials have given us beautiful, all-porcelain crowns. The color of the porcelain and the cement can be selected to achieve the desired result. The translucent quality of porcelain allows light to pass through, which means the crown very closely resembles natural tooth enamel. At Fountain View Dentistry, we use high-quality brands, including Empress II, Captek, and LAVA.
What to Expect
Crowns typically require two visits to place. During the first visit, Dr. Harden will conservatively reshape the tooth to make room for the crown. He’ll also take an impression to send to the laboratory and place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth. The laboratory will create the crown based on Dr. Harden’s specifications, and in 2 to 3 weeks, Dr. Harden will remove the temporary and place the final restoration. Care for your crown as you would a natural tooth, with daily brushing and flossing. Decay can still occur at the gum line, so regular maintenance and periodic dental visits will ensure your crown lasts long-term.
