Relaxation Dentistry

Relaxation dentistry may sound like a contradiction, but we’re trying to change that. We’ve combined a genuine, caring staff with a spa-like atmosphere, including running waterfalls, and safe options for sedation. All of our patients enjoy the soothing environment we’ve created, and our phobic patients are especially appreciative, because their dental care depends on it.

The terms “fear” and “anxiety” are often used interchangeably, but an important distinction exists. Fear is typically short-lived and disappears once the threat or danger passes. Anxiety, on the other hand, is a deep-rooted psychological response related to negative past experiences. Fear and anxiety both cause a strong “fight or flight” response and can make a person feel desperate or overwhelmed. Symptoms of fear and anxiety include:

  • Jitters
  • Perspiration
  • Racing Heart
  • Sweaty Hands
  • Feeling as though you might hyperventilation
  • Cancelling appointments or never scheduling them, because it’s easier to suffer the pain than face the anxiety

Many people feel angry with themselves for experiencing these symptoms and their inability to control them. At Fountain View Family Dentistry, we understand your apprehension and will treat you with care and compassion to counteract these symptoms and help you learn how to relax and have a positive experience with relaxation dentistry. Finding a dental office that understands and caters to your anxiety is half the battle.

We offer several ways to help you cope with your phobia. Proper breathing exercises and distractions, such as DVDs, headphones, chair massagers, neck pillows, foot massagers, and a paraffin hand wax will allow you to escape from your negative expectations and replace them with positive associations. These simple principles have worked for hundreds of our patients.

In addition to our comfort amenities, we offer safe, effective forms of sedation dentistry. Nitrous oxide is one of the safest forms of sedation available and can take the anxiety out of the most routine dental procedures, including cleanings. Most feel the effects of nitrous oxide sedation immediately and the sedation wears off completely within about five minutes of removing the nasal hood. This complete reversal allows you to safely drive home or go to work immediately following your appointment!

Another form of sedation dentistry we offer in our Woodstock office is computer-controlled anesthesia. This state-of-the-art device allows Dr. Harden to administer local anesthesia with the highest level of precision and comfort. You won’t have to worry about second injections or not feeling numb, because the computer operates with extreme accuracy. The computer-controlled anesthesia provides numerous benefits to patients with a fear of phobia of needles, although anyone can benefit from the use of this device.

With relaxation and sedation dentistry, you can receive your dental treatment successfully. You’ll feel great knowing that you have achieved a challenging goal with absolute ease, and we’ll feel great knowing we helped you receive needed oral healthcare. It’s a win-win!
